Meet The Illustrator: Ramona Davey

Name:
Ramona Davey

Describe your illustration style in ten words or less.
It's becoming more bold, bright and simplistic. Less equals more!

What items are an essential part of your creative space?
Sketch book, pencils and tracing paper for initial ideas, then I move onto my ipad with an apple pen and work in the Procreate art app.

Do you have a favourite artistic medium?
Digital because mistakes can be amended quicker and as I'm a late bloomer I need to work faster to catch up.

Name three artists whose work inspires you.
Currently, Ed Vere, Morag Hood and Chris Haughton.

Which artistic period would you most like to visit and why?
I'd like to visit the future and see how much damage AI will do to the world of illustration.

Who or what inspired you to become an illustrator?
I started off writing but hit a wall and needed to up my game. I realised that art was my thing at school - I was that arty kid - so I got back into it with the help of Tania McCartney's 52 Week Challenge.

Can you share a photo of your creative workspace or part of the area where you work most often? Talk us through it.
I work in various spaces according to my mood. In my office, at the kitchen table or outside in the shed where this photo is taken if I need to avoid the sight of the housework, the noise of my family or my cat who stalks me for food. (see attached)

What is your favourite part of the illustration process?
The storyboards, because it is the honeymoon period with the text where I can draw all possibilities and have fun!

What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator?
Draw what you makes you smile!

Ramona AKA Mo Davey is an experienced Primary teacher currently teaching art to high school students. She loves to write about strong characters and illustrate them using bold shapes and colours. Her debut picture book with Berbay Books comes out on 1st August 2024!
