Review: Boots

Boots was just a pair of boots.

A pair of Australian boots personified, tell the story of their life, encompassing the life of the person wearing the boots.

The boots sat waiting for someone to choose them from amongst the mix of clothing in the store window.

They were ready when the man and the boy came in and paid their money.

When the man put them on, the boots and the man became one.

The farm was a place of wide spaces and animals. From morning till night, Boots worked hard herding.

When it was time to relax, he knew how to enjoy himself. His life was filled with joy and laughter.

His family began to grow and when the fire raged across the fields, Boots was there to help.

When the floods came, again Boots rallied to keep his family safe.

In happiness and hardship, Boots was strong although there were times when he was afraid but didn’t show it.

Life was full of laughter and celebration. Boots shared it all with those he loved until he could no more.

The expectations, joys, and sorrows of life are gradually revealed through the growth of the farmer’s family, in this moving and deeply meaningful reflection on the cycle of life.

Krista Brennan’s outstanding full-page illustrations pay homage to Elizabeth Pulford’s minimal but warm and relevant text.

Beautifully presented, this publication is a dream. Every page is divine, with gorgeous colour spreads depicting the lives and background of the characters including the animals and the landscape.
