benign coffee table type book, this beautiful collection of clouds speaks to
Nephophiles (lovers of all things cloudy) and curious kids alike.
Addressing the most obvious curiosity first, what
exactly are clouds and how do they form, author and cloud compiler, Sarah
Zambello moves quickly on to the classification of clouds, which it turns out,
is a skyful of intriguing Latin-based nomenclature. But there’s no cause to
feel smothered by all these terms because each is described in simple engaging language
and accompanied by an identifying illustration.
In fact, the illustrations are so realistic, they make one want to race outside and scan the stratosphere. I already find myself peering skyward out of windows in an attempt to spot and name whatever I see!
With each exploration of each type or category of
cloud and their associated offspring aka varieties, snippets of interesting
information are given including what to look for, the altitude those clouds
exist in, their composition and their effect on the weather. As a keen past student
of meteorology, I find this aspect of cloud gazing particularly fascinating, especially
as humanity has been utilising the patterns and formations of clouds to foretell
the weather for centuries.
Perhaps the most beguiling thing about this illuminating
guide are the references to mythology, literature and past events. Zanella’s
breathtaking full-page illustrations add vigour, depth and almost surreal
movement drawing the reader’s eye to the focal point of each page – the clouds.
From sweeping sunsets, raging storms and piercing blue skies, this illustrated compendium
is an ethereal treasure chest of climatology.
It’s that simple. And utterly stunning. Cloud
Atlas is a wondrous introduction to the ever-changing world above us,
paying homage to the scientific essence of clouds, their beauty, their metaphoric
predispositions and reasons for being. Perfect for the budding meteorologist or
Nephophile or just the kind of young person who loves to lie flat on their back
gazing into the heavens, bearing witness to a whole other world and wondering how
