Review: Because I’m Māori: He Māori Ahau

A wee preface of explanation: I am not Māori, although I have been mistaken for one many a time. And to be frank, I’ve always enjoyed and admired the rich and vibrant culture of our cousins ‘across the ditch’.

So, when this colour-filled, bilingual ode to Māori culture and identity kapa haka’ed (apologies for verbalising that) its way across my desk, how could I say no.

Conceived and created by the talented Kiwi born, Aussie-based, Nicolla Hemi-Morehouse, this absorbing picture book greets readers from sun’s first smile to its last repast.

A small group of children, yawn and stretch their way into a new day of self-appreciation and cultural exploration.

Expressed in both English and te reo Māori or in the language of the Māori on each page, this singsong journey is visually supported with many rich aspects of Māori tradition. Some recognisable, others more subtle and perhaps less familiar to non-New Zealanders. From dazzling mountain tops to treasure-laden seas, Māori ways and symbols of significance are deftly woven into each boldly illustrated page.

All create an enticing palate of fun and cultural understanding. These sorts of representative narratives not only extend understanding but foster cultural pride, cement identity and promote societal well-being. One can almost hear the melodious voice of those who people these pages, a picture book production that both strengthens and inspires.

For those with a keen appreciation for music, scan the QR code at the back of the book for both the English and Māori version of Because I’m Māori. Lyrics and the musical score are included in this delightful book / pukakpuka to further enrich the experience.
