Boy (that’s how Gramps casually addresses his grandson) goes to see Gramps at the retirement home, every Wednesday after school.
This is the highlight of the week for both of them. For Gramps claims to have lived many roles in his lifetime.
These he recalls in minute
detail, in an animated, flowing and lighthearted narrative, full of excitement and non-stop action.
But no story compares to the one about the time
that he was known as the famous magician, The Astonishing Alfredo. With
his white dove, Montgomery, the Mysterious Bird of Mystery, who sang a
song at the end of each show, the two brought the house down.
The stories the old man shares with his grandson are so incredible, so imaginative and unlikely, the boy finds it hard to accept them as truth.
But he loves listening to them regardless. It is precious time spent with his grandpa.
Fame has a way of changing people, and
birds, often in a bad way.
When in time fame transforms Montgomery into an
envious, uncontrollable bird that wants to be the star of the show, the outcome
is something that even the eloquent Gramps has difficulty putting into story
form.
This brilliant chapter book, written and
illustrated by Antony Elworthy, contains so many creative, unbelievable tales, you simply can’t put it down until the end.
A wonderful read in perfect prose, it demonstrates
the importance of storytelling and the role it plays in people’s lives, especially when
words are shared between a loving older and younger person.
This type of sharing is perhaps the
most memorable and priceless experience for both.
Thoroughly entertaining, this book should not be missed. Ideal for as young as junior readers, and adults that love children’s books.
