This warm hug of a book made me want to scoop up armfuls of welcome cookies, throw them into the blue sky and have them rain down on me with abandon.
It’s one of
those very special stories where every page-turn is a cornucopia of discovery, filled
with things to make your mouth water – and your tummy rumble.
Mabel loves visiting the Sugar Plum Café, and specifically she loves visiting Miss Plum because of her radiant smile (among other things, of course. She is a café owner after all!).
The café has a vast array of tempting cakes and cookies and on top of that, there’s a smarty-arty picture wall and lots of fun things for small people to do and see.
So
understandably, Mabel is saddened when her beloved café closes down and a new
one takes its place…
And yet, Mabel
also discovers that she may just be able to help the new owner with her very
good ideas and welcoming nature, This story shows – in surprising and
delightful ways - what can happen when we are able to embrace new beginnings.
The Welcome
Cookies brings
together many vital elements that will resonate within young children and the
adults who read to them. As award-winning author Kay Baillie says:
‘The Welcome Cookies shows how a child has the power to make someone feel special and welcome.’
Kirrili Lonergan’s stunning illustrations are simply delightful, adding exponentially to the reading experience by being lush, fresh and detailed. Created with what appears to be a mix of pencil, wash and collage, these sometimes scribbly and always joyful offerings, invite long moments of revisiting and poring over.
This is the second picture book I’ve recently reviewed that contains a recipe on the back page, which is always a welcome addition in my book!
Sheer delight.
