Review: Off To The Nursery: A Celebration Of Gardening, Plants And Seasons

This super-duper-hardcover picture book (perfect for surviving the gardens it will undoubtedly end up being read in!) is a feast for the senses.

It’s got two curved edges and a brightly coloured cover which includes a little bit of neon orange, along with a very enticing array of plants in a basket.

Spring is here and it’s time to plant the garden.

In this book, author/illustrator Alice Oehr has gifted Australian children with a how-to guide for the spring planting of all manner of garden plants – from tidbits for lunchboxes and dinner, to bird and butterfly-attracting plants, dear little succulents and Australian natives in all their glory.

This book is chock-full of information, answers to questions you haven’t even asked yet, practical gardening ideas for all ages, and wonderful illustrations which are engaging and delightful. The cast of characters who work at the nursery reads like an international who’s who list, and it’s fabulous.

Award-winning artist Oehr, uses pencil, crayon, cut paper and digital collage in this work. The bold and almost textured illustrations create a vibrant and enticing ‘market garden’ that children and adults will love poring over.

Familiar-looking fruit boxes and seed packets sit among delicious looking fruits and veggies while friendly faces offer advice – there’s something for everyone at this nursery.

I can highly recommend this playful, inspiring and practical book to anyone who’s ever thought about planting a garden, and has wondered where to start.

The perfect book to gift. Or to keep!
