It is baby birth time at the Taronga Zoo. Sophia and best friend Ollie now have official volunteer status, so they spend most of their free time at the Zoo.
While helping with the wildlife, Sophia realises that due to the different type of interests they have, a rift could easily occur between them.
This fear surfaces when Ollie’s little sister is left in his care for a few hours and Sophia begins to feel cheated of time with her friend.
When it happens again, Sophia is further disgruntled with Ollie, without understanding why. She must accept and adjust to situations that can change suddenly, to retain Ollie's friendship.
It is a busy week for the volunteers. There are the usual emergencies that call for attention at the Wildlife Hospital. Some are humorous incidents concerning animals.
The two friends love the fact that they can take part in responsible activities such as helping with the birth of baby goats, being trusted with showering a baby pigmy hippo, and witnessing a newborn chimpanzee amongst other first-time things that fill their days.
Each book is a pleasure to read due to the volume of unknown information about animals and their personal care, that flows through the story.
It is also filled with humour, and lots of animal jokes.
Important issues are addressed such as the damage done to sea creatures, particularly to endangered species by the disposal of plastic in the oceans.
A wonderful series from which children can learn so much.
Night Owls is the last book in this excellent series based on the Taronga Zoo and its animals.
Best friends
Sophia and Ollie are now enjoying school Christmas Holidays. Both are happy to
be back at the Zoo, as official Zoo volunteers.
Sophia wants to become a vet like her mum and Ollie
wants to be a Zookeeper or biologist. He takes copious amounts of notes. These
can be found at the end of each story under Ollie’s Fun Fact File.
At the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning,
they are set a new challenge - to test a Treasure Trek, a fun activity for kids
coming through the Zoo’s education programs.
It’s a type of treasure hunt, with one clue given at a time until the four clues are solved. This is an enjoyable and exciting challenge as Sophia loves solving puzzles. It comes with a time limit and a master clue.
Here, the reader gets to interact with what the
children are doing by trying to solve the clue.
This four-book series encases a lot of important information so that it fits comfortably through the storyline.
I loved this superb and well-written, well- illustrated series.
I learnt a great deal of interesting facts about animals, their care, habits, and
the Zoo from it. Children will learn so much including alternative and interesting careers waiting to be discovered, that can be fulfilling.
