Review: The Wonderful World of Carnivorous Plants

The Wonderful World of Carnivorous Plants, is another tour through nature and its amazing creatures.

Carnivorous plants hold many secrets.

They are eclectic with their food choices and are meat-eaters by necessity. Few are vegetarians.

Over time they have mastered the skill of catching the type of food they need to survive.

A good example is the Venus Flytrap, that snacks on spiders, flies, and mosquitoes amongst other living delicacies.

The Biblis has its own method, using its sticky leaves to trap insects.

The Round-leaved Sundew and Forked Sundew are other sticky characters that wrap up their food to eat later.

These are the type of plants that fill this divine book. Bizarre and uncommon. Each double spread represents an interesting and attractive species, against bright, fully coloured pages.

Some people might call them gruesome, but nature has equipped them well to be able to continue the species. But they need help to do so, as some are endangered, and like the Waterwheel Plant, in some areas of the world, are extinct.

The Waterwheel Plant is a floater, and so is the Common Bladderwort. They are similar in that they both prefer water to land. Nine plants are referenced, each one with their individual quirks and tastes, with a rich Glossary from which to draw more information.

Award- winning Suzanne Houghton, has produced another stunning book, ideal for the weird and curious, and those that long to learn something new and unusual. Written in rhyming verse, it shouldn’t be missed.
